Tudor Dixon, Michigan’s Trump-backed GOP candidate for governor, needled Gov. Gretchen Whitmer repeatedly Friday with jokes a few 2020 scheme to kidnap her — drawing Democrats’ ire.
“The unhappy factor is that Gretchen will tie your arms, put a gun to your head, and ask should you’re prepared to speak,” Dixon — who has made a marketing campaign difficulty of Whitmer’s heavy-handed COVID lockdowns — said at a Troy, Mich. fund-raiser that featured Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway.
“For somebody so fearful about being kidnapped, Gretchen Whitmer positive is sweet at taking enterprise hostage and holding it for ransom,” Dixon added, to applause and cheers from the group.
Democrats howled in protest.
“She’s fully unfit to steer Michigan,” the Democratic Governors Association tweeted.
The kidnap plot was “no laughing matter,” mentioned Whitman marketing campaign spokesperson Maeve Coyle.
“Gov. Whitmer has confronted severe threats to her security and her life,” Coyle said. “The truth that Tudor Dixon thinks it’s a joke reveals that she is totally unfit to serve in public workplace.
Fourteen individuals have been arrested in reference to a plot to kidnap Whitmer in 2020. Two of them have been convicted last month on prices of kidnapping conspiracy and conspiracy to make use of a weapon of mass destruction.
However two others have been acquitted in April after their protection attorneys argued that FBI informants had devised the kidnapping plan after which talked them into joining it.
At a second Dixon rally Friday in Muskegon, Donald Trump Jr. amplified that theme, calling the 2020 scheme a “pretend kidnap plot orchestrated by the FBI.”
Dixon piled on, riffing that Whitmer seemed like she would “slightly be kidnapped by the FBI” throughout a gathering with President Joe Biden.
“Yeah, the media is like, ‘Oh my gosh, she did it once more,’” she famous with a smirk.
